The Shire of Wellington council today approved a tender to build a fabric shade at the Yarram Pool, located in Yarram, in the Australian state of Victoria. The meeting took place via Skype due to a COVID-19 lockdown in Victoria. Councillor Gayle Maher, who introduced the motion, told the council that the pool upgrades had been discussed within the Yarram community for more than 20 years. Maher told of her experience as a parent helper at the pool, where she helped children at swimming lessons, and said that “many of the kids, those particularly not in wetsuits” would come out of the pool with blue lips.
At the meeting, the tenderer, which was previously kept confidential, was announced as Shade N Sails, which describes itself as specialising in “manufacturing and installing high-quality specialised outdoor shade products”. The cost for this project is estimated to be A$310,000, with A$250,000 coming from Sport and Recreation Victoria, a government office, and A$61,000 coming from the local Rotary Club of Yarram.
Councillor Maher called the installation “a really positive project for the Yarram community”. Maher said that the end result of the upgrade will look similar to a shade at the Toora pool in South Gippsland Shire. Maher also acknowledged the Rotary Club’s financial contribution, saying that the A$61,000 provided “certainly helped get this project across the line”.
The council voted unanimously to adopt the recommendations of two documents — a contract and a tender evaluation report. These documents are confidential, as they relate to “private commercial information… that if released, would unreasonably expose the… undertaking to disadvantage”. The proposed fabric shade would cover the main pool and toddlers’ pool. A separate contract is due to be let for installing heat pumps at the Yarram pool, in order to raise the pool water temperature to 29°C.
